Beach Aromatherapy
We all know that certain scents can bring us pleasure. Scented candles, bath oils, room fresheners, fresh flowers, shampoos, and perfumes/colognes can all lift our spirits and make us feel happy. But Aromatherapy, simply explained; therapy through the use of aromas, has been around for thousands of years as both cures and cosmetics. Essentially, the sense of smell is associated with the body; the nose, but it is recognized by the mind, and reflected in the spirit. Thus, aromatherapy can benefit the mind, body, and spirit.
Driving back from Edgartown, feeling a bit stressed and weakened by life on this day, I pull up alongside State Beach. Getting out of my car, I am drawn toward the ocean, with an intense magnetic pull. With each step, I sink into the warm pillowy sand. The muscles in my back instantly relax. Just a few steps in, the wind carries the salt-shaken air to me.
I close my eyes, pause a moment, and breathe it in deeply to the core of my being. I let out a relaxing, "Ahhhhhhh, the smell of the ocean."My mind goes quiet. I hear the rhythmic pounding of the waves lapping up the shore.
Continuing toward the beach I greet the ocean, drinking in its deep blue color, like the eyes of a past lover. It captivates me, my heart is filled, as the tape in my mind rewinds over the years of daily encounters. Growing up on the Island, playing alongside family members and friends on this beach daily, was truly a gift.
I feel solitude, but somehow as if I am comforted and welcomed by this old friend. I ask myself, "Why has it been so long since we have been together?" I exhale the day's challenges into the beach, as I turn my face toward the sun, feeling its glow upon my cheeks.
The freshly scented, evergreen, beach grass is a refreshing aroma and mixes perfectly with the marine air.
I glance up the shoreline. My eyes follow the graceful pattern of sea weed from past high tides.
The Khaki tinted sand, splattered with the many colored stones and shells, including the vibrant purple wampum, resembles a Jackson Pollack painting.
Beach Aromatherapy can awaken all our senses. This service is always open, year round, and is free to all. We are fortunate, if we remember here on the Vineyard that , "What life can weaken, a trip to the beach can strengthen." Stop by, breath it in, let its wonderful aromas fill you and heal you.
