Dream Weaving

"The greatest gift that facilitating inner work can bring others, is the opportunity for individuals to explore and develop the opening and deepening of their roles as authentic artists and authors of their own lives. By looking within at our wise and higher selves we enliven and strengthen our own unique heart connection to the universe."
~ Gwendolyn Natusch, M.Ed.

Did you know that our dreams were scientist's first tool to unlock the mysteries of our universe? Earlier civilizations thought that nature and mankind's experiences and events could be organized and predicted through dreams. Dreamers have influenced our world for centuries. There have always been dreamers that have paid attention to their nightly visages. Those such as;  Abraham Lincoln who dreamed of his own assassination, Einstein's theory of relativity came in a dream, Robert Louis Stevenson wove his story The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in a dream, and William Blake published from the contents of his dreams. These are only a few from the plethora of dreamers who have influenced and shaped our thinking.

We still, today, hold on to the magical feeling of dreams. Our dreams are our most mystical and imaginative creations. But, what do they mean and why do we have them? Erich Fromm, Carl Jung, and Sigmund Freud are chieves among our modern day dream believers. Carl Jung, believed that dreams are comprised of the unconscious elements which contain all that we need to know about our soul and mind's psychic troubles. Dreams can tell us why we are acting like the victim, the martyr, the neglected child, or other archetypal roles. More importantly, dreams can show us the remedy.

“The dream is a little hidden door in the innermost and most secret recesses of the soul.”
 ~ Carl Jung

Dr. Henry Reed, psychologist and author of Dream Solutions: Using Your Dreams to Change Your Life (1991) suggests that the dream guides the individual to solutions to their life's challenges. Robert Moss, author of Three Only Things: Tapping the Power of Dreams agrees with these leaders of thought. Moss, takes the idea of dreams and growth to the full extent. “Dreams are extraordinary sources of guidance, healing, and power.”

Dreams are therapeutic in the tales they share with us. Dreams are mental activities occurring during REM sleep. The act of dreaming is actually physical while the contents of our dreams are psychological. It is thought that everyone has dreams, whether they remember them or not. A dream takes you outside of the story of your life and unfolds for you your deeper story. Your dreams are calling to you for a reason. Your heart wants to be heard and it is speaking to you through your dreams.

Dreams speak the language of your soul. They use the language of symbols and metaphor, which addresses emotional and physical aspects of the dreamer's life. Symbols in a dream are the images that are featured. They point to the repressed aspects of the dreamer's emotions. They reveal instincts which are stored in the unconscious mind.

Our dreams are remedies for healing and growth. They require a language that expresses emotions and deeper, broader meanings. Dreams unfold in images and metaphor. Metaphor is where one thing is spoken of as if it were something else. Metaphors expand meanings beyond words to incorporate emotions and deeper than surface meanings. In most cases, we understand dreams by using metaphorical references and not literal interpretations.  For example, if your dream reveals a house, this house is most often a representation of yourself and your physical and spiritual condition. If you dream about a city, it references how well you know different aspects of yourself. If you are scratched in your dream, this refers to minor irritation in your life. If you pay attention to the context of the dream it will unfold a deeper understanding of this irritation and in many cases a solution.

“Dreaming is waking up.”
~ Robert Moss

Moss has come up with the concept of Nine Powers of Dreaming;
1) We solve problems in our sleep.
 2) Dreams coach us for future challenges and opportunities.
 3) Dreams hold up a magic mirror to our actions and behaviors.
 4) Dreams show us what we need to do to stay well.
 5) Dreams are our creative studio.
 6) Dreams help us mend our divided selves.
 7) Dreams are a secret laboratory.
 8) Dreams are the key to better relationships.
 9) Dreams recall us to our higher purpose.

How often have you said to yourself: “It was only a dream” and then dismissed these internal messages as if they have nothing to do with your life at all? Dreaming is your higher wisdom speaking out to you. What might happen if you listened and interacted?

“If we would only care to take a deeper look within ourselves, we might just find Aladdin's lamp after all and we may well be our own genie.”
~Caroline Myss
